About
Raised in Southern California, Katie Schwehr received her Bachelor of Art from the University of California Santa Barbara in 2011, in both Art and Art History. She later received a Masters of Fine Art from Memphis College of Art in the spring of 2017. Her work has been exhibited throughout the United States and is currently residing in Memphis, Tennessee.
Influenced by art at an early age Schwehr became fascinated by all materials and the beauty within the world. She picked up many forms of media from her mother and would quickly learn them due to obsessive repetitive tendencies. She experiments in different ways to manipulate processes and materials with those same repetitive tendencies. Striving to bridge the gap between art and craft, Schwehr explores the progression of memories both physical and metaphysically using different media, ephemeral materials, and time-based processes. Her work is influenced by memories, secrets and what our own minds hold, values, and changes over time. In her process, she reacts and transforms each piece by reflecting and revisiting memories. She shows how stories and recollections of events can have an effect on our visual and emotional view of the world. Artists Janine Antoni, David Catá, Christine Mauersberger, Oscar Muñoz, Michael Snow, Eva Hesse, Louise Bourgeois, and Christian Boltanski influence her work both conceptually and technically.
